Karel de Waal Malefyt

Karel has lived in greater Grand Rapids from day one, and currently lives Jenison. He grew up in a busy household where music, athletics, and farming were played in balance.

On the music end, Karel began his schooling before attending school. Like many, it began with 1 finger playing on the piano with hours of note flashcards. Once in school, he picked up the violin and also sang in the Holland Youth Chorale. He took a hiatus from singing as his 1st soprano voice took the long road to the depths of the bass clef. While at Unity Christian High School, Karel rejoined the choir scene and has continued singing since. At Calvin College, he graduated with a Major in Music Education, and was a member of the Meistersingers, the Campus Choir, and of the Capella, of which he was the section leader of for four years, and the assistant conductor for two.

Karel currently teaches music at Grandville Calvin Christian, which includes High School and Middle School Choirs, and the Elementary, Middle, and High School Orchestras. Karel also helps in directing the musical, and coaches the boys Varsity and girls JV soccer teams. When not working at Calvin Christian or singing, Karel is most likely to enjoy his time fishing, camping, or spending time with his friends and family.
